Synopsis/Blurb:

In a country beset by civil war, New London defends itself behind a giant wall. Inside the city, children are forced to work from an early age, except for the lucky few who train to be leaders in the re-purposed Palace of Westminster. 12-year-old orphaned Pax is brilliant at recycling old tech. He enjoys working on the verti-farms and just wants a bit of peace and quiet. But when that is taken away from him, his only hope is to pass a near-impossible exam and join the other students in Scholastic Parliament. There he’ll make new friends and new enemies. He’ll get tested like never before. And he’ll discover that not everything is quite what it seems under the mayor’s harsh leadership

My Thoughts:

Pax and the Missing Head is a middle-grade dystopian set in New London that has been torn apart and divided by civil war. The story follows the main character Pax a 12-year-old orphan. Pax is a talented young boy who can fix things. However, his talents are wasted as he is forced to work on boring tasks by the leaders. However, his determined to find a way to make his dreams come true. That’s when his given the opportunity to attend the Scholastic Parliament (an elite school). However, he soon discovers things aren’t as he was expecting.

This is a well-written middle grade but I did struggle a little at the start. This is because I found that the story took a little while to get going. But the pace does pick up once Pax enters the Scholastic Parliament, and it is at this point I couldn’t stop reading.

The character are well drawn and found the main character Pax very relatable. There were some unlikeable characters who I could have slapped a few times if they were real!

This is a great action-packed middle grade to start the series. I can’t wait to see what lies in store for Pax and his friends next.
