About The Book:

Genre: Satire Fiction

Amazon (UK) || Goodreads

Synopsis/Blurb:

Two people trapped in their different worlds. One by wealth and one by poverty. Twenty years working for The Firm has given Marcus Barlow everything he wants but has taken his soul in return. Finding a way to leave has become an obsession.

Claire Halford’s life hits rock bottom when she is caught stealing food from Tesco Express. Left alone by her husband with two small children and an STI, her suicide music is starting to play louder in her head.

A chance meeting brings them together. As a mystery virus from China starts to run riot across the country, their world’s collide and they find they have more in common than they knew.Set in the early months of 2020, Maybe It’s About Time is a story about the difficulty of changing lives for the better. Starting as a funny and satirical view of the egocentric world of professional services, it gives way to a heart-warming story of an unlikely friendship that rejuvenates Marcus and Claire, giving them both hope for a better future.

My Thoughts:

Maybe It’s About Time follows two main characters, Marcus and Claire. Marcus works in a high paid job and has everything money can buy, while Claire is a single mum on universal credit. Their paths cross one day, and they form an unlikely friendship. The story starts at the very beginning of the Covid pandemic and continues through lockdown.

The story is told in the third person and is well written, yes I did struggle a little at the beginning where I found it quite repetitive and slow, especially when it came to hearing about Marcus’s work and his moaning. But once Claire and Gavin came into the story, I started enjoying it much more.

I thought the characters were well done, I found them relatable and loved the interactions between the characters and loved watching the friendship between Marcus and Claire. I admit I didn’t like Marcus at first, but he grew on me as the story progressed. My favourite was definitely Claire.

This is a fun and engaging read with some serious topics which I found very interesting. It’s brilliantly accurate and well-researched.

Maybe It’s About Time is a book that might not be for everyone and one that has been difficult to review, but I enjoyed it very much.

This is Neil’s first book, and after reading this one, I hope there are more to come!!

About the Author:

I retired from a career in the corporate world in November 2019 with three objectives. To travel around the world and fly fish in the most exotic locations, to play my electric guitar better than I do and to write a novel that I could be genuinely proud of. The pandemic and lockdown in March 2020 put my first two objectives on hold leaving me no option but to start writing. Two and half years later, ‘Maybe It’s About Time’, my first novel, was published.

As a piece of work, I am incredibly proud of it. It makes me laugh and cry in equal measure. I am even more proud that readers seem to be enjoying it just as much and it is getting great reviews.

Travel and fly fishing has now started again, my guitar playing is improving and a sequel to ‘Maybe It’s About Time’ is planned to start in 2023!

    • It is a good read. I don’t think I’ve read many. The only ones that come to mind that might fall into this genre are Catch-22 and The Davinci Code. And put of those two, the Davinci Code was my favourite.

      • Catch-22 and The Da Vinci Code are both interesting choices. Satire can be a thought-provoking genre. Have you come across any other books that use satire effectively? What elements in The Da Vinci Code made it your favorite? Are there any other genres or authors you’re currently exploring?

      • I don’t really look for books in the Satire genre, but I thought Yellowface by R.F.Kuang used it well.

I loved all the code breaking and history behind it in The Da Vinci Code. It’s been many years since I’ve read it, so I can’t actually remember very much of it 😂.
I pretty much read most genres these days, although not the biggest fan of romance.
