My Thoughts & Review

Finally got around to reading this one. It’s been recommended to me so many times but I just never got around to picking it up until it was chosen as a buddy/May TBR twin read with my buddy Mirtha over on Goodreads.

In all honesty I was avoiding this book as it was so hyped up back when it came out and then again when the movie came out that I just didn’t feel like reading it, as at the time I had way too high expectations of it, and I didn’t want to be disappointed. However, fast forward a 5/6 odd years and here we are.

Now I’ve read it I don’t know to say. It’s probably all been said before but I really liked reading this one. It was a really quick and engaging read, although the storyline is based on a very hard topic, which is something personal to my heart as I lost a cousin to cancer. It’s been over 14 years but reading this book brought back some of the memories I have of him while he was going through his treatment.

I really liked how the story was written although it was based on a hard topic of cancer it wasn’t overpowering and at the same time it also covered things such as friendship, attraction, suffering, loss and death. It also had some good humour in too so it lifts the mood of the book.

I felt the narrative was really good too. Told in first person by Hazel made it believable. However, at times I did start to wonder about some of the  dialogue used. At times it felt it was unrealistic for teenagers. I’ve worked with teenagers in the past when I was a voluntary Youth Worker and I’ve never heard any teenager talk the way some of the characters do in this book.But maybe I just haven’t met teenagers this mature yet.

I have to admit I did have some watery eyes while reading this book, which is very rare for me. I highly recommend this book if you haven’t read it already, but if your prone to having a good cry while reading I suggest you don’t read this one in public.

This is the second book I’ve read by John Green, the first being Turtles All The Way Down and I have to say I like this one much more.
