Synopsis/Blurb (Taken from Goodreads):

“Natsuki Books was a tiny second-hand bookshop on the edge of town. Inside, towering shelves reached the ceiling, every one crammed full of wonderful books. Rintaro Natsuki loved this space that his grandfather had created. He spent many happy hours there, reading whatever he liked. It was the perfect refuge for a boy who tended to be something of a recluse.

After the death of his grandfather, Rintaro is devastated and alone. It seems he will have to close the shop. Then, a talking tabby cat called Tiger appears and asks Rintaro for help. The cat needs a book lover to join him on a mission. This odd couple will go on three magical adventures to save books from people have imprisoned, mistreated and betrayed them. Finally, there is one last rescue that Rintaro must attempt alone…”

My Thoughts

This is a book that both my best friend and I have been eyeing for a while, and we finally picked it up for our annual New Year’s Eve buddy read.

The Cat Who Saved Books is set in an old second-hand bookshop. It follows protagonist Rintaro, who is taken on adventures/challenges by a cat called “Tiger.” The reason is to save books.

This is a short but well-written book. It wasn’t particularly fast-paced, but it definitely leaves you with a lot to think about. It’s not only about saving books but also about friendship.

I thought the characters were well done, especially the protagonist, Rintaro. I enjoyed watching his character grow and develop in confidence as the book progresses. I also enjoyed watching the friendship and relationship built between the side characters. I admit I wasn’t a fan of Tiger the cat. in particular his cold attitude, but looking back while I write this, I can see why he was written the way he was.

This is a great book for any booker lover, looking for a quick but thought-provoking read!!
