Mini Reviews (July 2022 Reads)

Hi bookish friends!!

Hope you’re all doing well!!

As I’ve mentioned in other posts this year has been crazy busy and I’ve fallen so behind with sharing my thoughts on books I’ve read so far. To help me catch up I’ve decided to share my thought with mini reviews. So, here are my thoughts on some of the books I read back in July!!

(If you would like to know more about the books just click on the book images or titles and you’ll be taken to their Goodreads page.)

The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton💙💙

This is another book that I’d heard so many great things about and couldn’t wait to pick up. It started off intriguing but as it progressed I started to lose interest. The plot started to feel rather disjointed and the interesting plot turned out to be quite boring for me. At about the halfway point I did think about DNF-ing the book but decided to keep going. At this point, I swapped over to the audiobook, and while the narrators did a great job with the narration the book failed to keep my attention. I did finish the book but I really should have just given up.

That Night by Gillian McAllister💙💙💙💙

This is a well-written book that follows a plot that revolves around three siblings Joe, Cathy and Frannie. While on holiday one of the siblings is involved in an accident and a man is dead. From this point on things start to fall apart for the siblings. There are plenty of twists, some you will see coming and some not so much. Although I enjoyed the plot overall there were moments when I thought things were implausible and just didn’t quite fit. As for the characters I didn’t like them and didn’t agree with their decisions and actions but at the same time, I could see why they did a certain thing and made me wonder how far I would go in the same situation.

EXIT by Belinda Bauer 💙💙

The premises starts off really interesting and flew through the first 100 or so pages. However, just as the story got going things started going downhill. The pace slowed and lots of new characters started to appear out of nowhere. Most of them ended up being irrelevant and they just made things confusing, especially as some of them had more than one name and weird things started happening. This wouldn’t have been a problem but some of the stuff had absolutely nothing to do with the premises.

The pace did pick up near the end and there are also lots of twists at the end but sadly they left me even more confused rather than bringing the plot together and answering the questions I had. Sadly this book just wasn’t for me.
