Synopsis/Blurb (Taken from Goodreads):

“Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven’t all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we’ll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.

But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.

It’s even harder when you’re all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory—a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won’t stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there’s a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons.

But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone.”

My Thoughts & Review

After reading My Lovely Wife in December 2020 and loving it I couldn’t wait to give this one a go. I ended up downloading the audiobook from BorrowBox.

He Started It follows 3 siblings, Beth, Portia and Eddie, who end up going on a road trip, after their grandfather leaves a strange request in his will. They must complete the whole road trip that they took with their grandfather when they were younger. They thought this would be an easy road trip but it’s not plain sailing as everyone is hiding something.

The story is told in two different timelines it jumps from present time back to 1999 where we learn about their original road trip that they took with their grandfather.

This is one of those books that it very slow but at the same time you can feel the tension build and you just want to keep reading as you know something good is about to happen. There are definitely a lot of twists that you do not see coming, and there were a couple of occasions where I had to back track to make sure I heard right.

Throughout the whole book I only liked one character but sadly he was killed off and then for the rest of the book we’re left with the mediocre characters who I generally didn’t take a liking too. I couldn’t really relate to them and honestly wasn’t really interested in them.

Although I generally enjoyed this book I did feel the ending was a little disappointing. Yes, it was a surprising and one that I wasn’t expecting but at the same time everything happened so fast that it just felt rushed. Never the less I look forward to seeing what Samantha Downing has to offer to her readers next.
