Synopsis/Blurb (Taken from Goodreads):

When a grieving mother turns to an ancient Buddhist ritual for solace and mistakenly awakens a vengeful spirit, dark karma threatens to destroy everything she holds dear….

Struggling with depression after the death of her young daughter, Jennifer flees to a healing center in the Sri Lankan jungle. Encouraged to visit the local temple, she finds unexpected meaning in the beliefs of Buddhism. But it’s not long before she becomes entangled in the mystic—and dangerous—world of village folklore, and the slippery, transferable energy of karma.

Still, the jungle works its magic, and Jennifer begins to recover. Returning to Santa Monica, she rebuilds her life through painting, even opening her heart to a new love. But when her deceased daughter appears begging for help, and mounting bodies baffle the police, she battles to repair the shift in karma and free her daughter’s soul.

My Thoughts & Review

I wasn’t too sure what to expect from this novel but it really didn’t disappoint!!!

A Twist of Karma is a paranormal fiction novel that starts off with the main character Jennifer in Sri Lanka at a yoga/Wellbeing retreat where she is trying to overcome the guilt and grief she is suffering after her daughter dies from a swimming accident in the backyard. But while at the retreat events cause Jennifer’s life is to be turned upside down, when unexplainable things start to happen.

This is a well-crafted novel that I found to be perfectly paced, with twists and turns that keep you wanting more. While reading I learnt a bit more about Buddhism and what it is. The subject was explained subtly throughout the book.

I really liked the characters in this book, they were well developed and very believable. I think this maybe the first time where I actually liked all the characters including the side characters. That doesn’t happen very often as I nearly always seem to find one that I dislike.

This was definitely an intriguing read that I enjoyed very much even with the sad moments. I highly recommend this book. There are some trigger warnings I feel some readers need to beware of. I have listed some of them below.

Trigger Warnings: Loss of a child, Grief, Depression, Death
