The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin
Source: Library Book
Genres: Fantasy, Sci-fi
Publication Date: 18th August 2016
Synopsis/Blurb (taken from Goodreads):
“This is the way the world ends… for the last time.
The season of endings grows darker as civilization fades into the long cold night. Alabaster Tenring – madman, world-crusher, savior – has returned with a mission: to train his successor, Essun, and thus seal the fate of the Stillness forever.
It continues with a lost daughter, found by the enemy.
It continues with the obelisks, and an ancient mystery converging on answers at last.
The Stillness is the wall which stands against the flow of tradition, the spark of hope long buried under the thickening ashfall. And it will not be broken.”
My Thoughts & Review
After finishing The Fifth Season I couldn’t wait to get started on this one!!!
The Obelisk Gate picks up from the end of the first book, so you was looking forward to reading how it the story progressed but sadly it one didn’t quite live up to the first book. I think this one suffered from the middle book syndrome.
The book is fantastically written with great representation and diversity of characters, just like the first book but I did find that the pacing was a bit slower and everything felt like it was taking too long to fit into place. During the first half of the book nothing much happens, but just like the first book you have to stick with it.
Sadly, this book didn’t quite live up to my high expectations, but never the less a good read in the end. The Fifth Season is still my favourite out of the two books so far. I’m really hoping that the final book The Stone Sky will rescue the series for me, especially as I’ve been wanting to read it for so long!!!
By the time you see this review, I will have hopefully finished The Stone Sky.
