The Witches by Roald Dahl

The WitchesFormat: Paperback

Source: Library

Publisher: Puffin Books

Genres: Fantasy, Children’s Fiction

Publication Date: 9th January 1989

Synopsis/Blurb (Goodreads):

“‘A REAL WITCH is easily the most dangerous of all the living creatures on earth.’

That’s a pretty horrifying thought. More horrifying still is that real witches don’t even look like witches. They don’t ride around on broomsticks. They don’t even wear black cloaks and hats. They are vile, despicable, scheming harridans who disguise themselves as nice, ordinary ladies.

So how can you tell when you’re face to face with one? Read this story and you’ll find out all you need to know. You’ll also meet a real hero, a wise old grandmother and the most gruesome, grotesque gang of witches imaginable.”

My Thoughts & Review

This was one of my favourite Roald Dahl books growing up and remember picking it up from the library every few weeks. The last time I read this book was about 15 years ago, when I read it with one of my nephews. I also loved watching the movie, and if I’m honest I can’t wait to see the new movie adaption that is coming out this year.

For those who still haven’t read the book, The Witches starts off in Norway and then moves to the UK. It follows the story of a young boy and his Norwegian grandmother who attempt to stop a group of secret society of witches who are plotting to get rid of all the children around the world.

Re-reading this book as an adult just wasn’t the same as reading it when I was child but I still enjoyed it very much. I still love the creativity of the plot and the characters. I also still love the illustrations by Quentin Blake. Together both made a great team, in making the books great reads.

My younger self would keep the rating 5 out of 5 but my adult self gives it a solid 4.

I read this for the prompt Novel that will Get A Movie Adaption in 2020 for the 2020 TBR Reading Challenge created by Mina @ Stacked Reviews
