Synopsis/Blurb (taken from Goodreads):

“Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Written with Reid’s signature talent for creating “complex, likable characters” (Real Simple), this is a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

My Thoughts & Review

This is another book that I kept seeing and hearing great things about everywhere on social media and really wanted to see what all the hype was about. It’s not really the kind of book that I would have picked up myself but I had to see what all the hype was about.

Now don’t get me wrong I did enjoy the book but I wasn’t amazed by it.

It took me awhile to get into at the beginning but when the book became more about Evelyn I became more interested and invested in the book.

I felt that some of the characters were a little underdeveloped, especially the side characters, and I didn’t really care for them. I liked the character Evelyn however, I like how the author made her come across as a strong woman who is willing to do whatever needs to be dome to get her ideal career and life that she’s always wanted.

The book is well written but there was just something missing for me. I don’t know what it is but I think it may have been that deep down I felt like this was more of a romance novel.

Even though there were some parts of this book that I found a little unbelievable and slow, and parts that seemed to drag on a bit in places, I did enjoy listening to the audiobook. The 3 narrators did a pretty good job of narrating the story but I did find that their narrative was a little slow. But I managed to fix this by just speeding up audiobook to X2.

Overall an enjoyable read that I do recommend.
